Scarf Riot

And now, just in time for Holidaze, I present two scarves. Both are one-skein salvations...

Scarf One: Loop Scarf:

You make the loop first, and then knit until you run out of yarn.:100 yards worsted weight yarn, size 8 needles ( approx gauge 4.5 /inch for a 6 inch wide scarf) Cast on 14 stitches. Knit until strip is 8 inches long. Curve the strip around until you can stick the tip of the RH needle into the corner edge of the cast on , and pick up 14 stitches along the cast on edge, making now 28 sts on needle.Knit until you almost run out of yarn ( leave about a yard remaining) and then bind off. This one I actually made in Misti Alpaca Chunky, and used 10 stitches for the loop and 20 for the body, and Double Moss Stitch, but the principle is the same. You can also slip the last stitch of each row and knit the first stitch for a nicer edge.

Scarf Two: Sparkly Triangle Scarf.

Uses one Skein of Artyarns Ensemble with Beads and Sequins, ( 128 yards) size 11 needle.

Cast on 3 sts;
Row 1: Kfb,knit to last stitch, kfb. Repeat row until almost out of yarn ( about 4-6 yards left).
Stretchy Bindoff: K2,* knit these 2 together thru back loop( insert tip of LH needle into front of the two sts as if doing SSK). Knit one. Repeat from *to end. Weave in ends. Enjoy!

Oohh I am loving both scarf ideas. Thanks for showing and telling how. That makes it so easy to get out the yarn and try one or both.
And I love the holidaze word. It is already starting! Yipes.

Instead of being holidazed by going shopping at the mall I will make those scarves as gifts! Thanks for sharing the patterns. They look wonderful.

Re: that 'keyhole' scarf that you made of double moss stitch in Misti Alpaca Chunky:

1)what size needles did you use? aaannd, 2)how many sleins of the yarn?

For Misti Alpaca Chunky: Use size 10 1/2 needles, and one skein of yarn ( 108 yards).

Thanks, Susan. "kfb" means: knit into the front of the stitch, and then keeping the loop of stitch on the left needle, swing the right needle around and knit into the back of the same stitch, thus knitting 2 stitches where one was previously. Also known as "Increase 1".

The 2nd scarf doesn't have any decreases listed. Shouldn't it?

Hi Dena: It starts with the middle back point and grows like a triangle shawl. No decreases anywhere as it is built by increasing. To make it a square you could decrease, but for a triangle you only need increases.

Hi Jeri,

Love the loop scarf, but I'm confused about something... if you do a double moss with an even number of stitches on the loop, when you pick up the cast on edge and begin the pattern again, don't you wind up with the same stitch twice i.e my working edge from look like this on the needle:

ppkkppkkppkkppkkppkk

with the needle pointing left and the working yarn coming from the far left p.

When I pick up the cast on edge, the stitches below the cast on edge are ppkkppkkppkkppkkppkk, with the needle pointing right. if the left needle's first two stitches are knits then the next row (the picked up stitches) should be purled, which would give you 4 purls in the joined row. Am I doing something wrong?

Hi Alexis: The solution for that would be to work 2 more rows of the loop section so the middle 4 stitches are not the same on the joining row. You are correct that it can happen that you have 4 purls in a row if you don't take this precaution, and if using an even number divisible by 4 in the loop section. You might have to start that joining row with two purls to make it work out right. Sorry if this is confusing, but it should work out!

Help please !
I
F following the sparkly triangle scarf pattern I'm assuming this starts at the V of the triangle? How do you get the tails without decreases??

Jeri said...

As I explained in comment above, the scarf starts at the middle point, and grows by increasing at both sides, until the long bindoff at the end. Like a triangle shawl, but without the increases in the middle.

When picking up the stitches, do you pick them up knit wise or purl wise or both?

Jeri said...

Dear Cait: You may pick them up however way looks best to you. If you pick up in pattern, it might look best, but it doesn't really matter that much, in my opinion. You can try it both ways and see what you like best. Enjoy!
