Crochet Ties for sweaters and vests

Sometimes, the best closure for a lightweight garment, especially a vest or linen lace sweater, is a crochet tie. An i-cord or a simple crochet chain is either too thick or too thin. This crochet cord makes the best tie, as far as I’ve seen, and is quick and easy to work.

Materials: two yard lengths of yarn, crochet hook size appropriate to the yarn used. In this example I am using Euroflax linen, a sport-weight linen, and a crochet hook size F.

Put on garment and mark placement of ties with a removable marker.

1.      Start with one 36” length of yarn for each side of sweater. Fold in half, use crochet hook to pull loop through edge of garment, and then both yarns together over hook and pull through resulting loop.     

 

2.     2. Tighten loop around hook. Grasp one of the strands of yarn and yo hook and pull through loop on hook. Tighten so loop is small enough to get hook through but not messy.

3.    3.  Grasp second strand of yarn from underneath, yo and pull through loop. 

4.     4. Grasp first strand of yarn from underneath and yo, pull through loop. Be sure to tighten loop as you work the next strand.

5.      Alternate strands through loop, repeating steps 3 and 4, always tightening previous strand as you pull next strand through.

 

6.      When length needed is reached, pull both strands together through loop and tighten. 

Make a second tie for other side of sweater.
